Lithuania, the country of Churches

Medium-sized country in Europe, located northeast of Poland with the capital at Vilnius.

This Baltic state with a population of 3,4 million became part of the EU in 2004 and since then its economy got a strong boost, becoming one of the most dynamically growing ones on the continent. Once a Soviet-ruled country, Lithuania has re-become free and prosperous.

The rich culture of this country is impressive. You might not expect to see so many universities, architectural wonders from the past in this part of Europe.

Attractions in Lithuania

The reddish Trakai Fort is one of the icons presented on tourism-related brochures, advertisements. It is a truly beautiful place just a short bus ride away from Vilnius.

The capital city (Vilnius) is the biggest city with over half a million people. Nevertheless architecturally it is one of the most attractive cities from the former "eastern block".

You should stay at least 3-5 days to wonder the streets, admire the cityscape, discover the architectural riches from the past. And, you should also visit the new business district where skyscrapers arise.

Kaunas is the second largest city with over 355.000 inhabitants. Beautiful old houses, an any old churches, interesting-looking city hall with a white tower and also a fort make it the second most attractive place outside Vilnius.

- the University of Vilnius is one of Europe's oldest and was founded in 1579 by Hungarian Stephen Báthory, ruler of Transylvania

- in the 13-15th centuries, Lithuania was known under the name "The Grand Duchy of Lithuania" and stretched from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, it covered a much larger area then France does today
